The Influence and Role of the Pacific Women

Little is recorded and known of the Pacific Women’s influence in this region due to the destruction of the arts and culture by Europeans.

The women’s ceremonies are for fertility, love, and happiness. The ceremonies include music to make everyone happy and content.

Whether it is the performing arts to show the reverence of their culture to their beliefs or physical art and crafts, each piece of art created by women tell the stories of their society.

These pieces are meant to show more than just their story. It is meant to show their abilities and the recognition of their roles within their culture.

The pottery and baskets we see today from the original cultures and societies are now considered art.

These were created for everyday purposes, however, to make it distinct and pleasing the women painted and decorated them.

These paintings show the society from the basic to the most complicated aspects.

On the pottery you may see women carrying items, gathering food, or bearing children. They would also show the role of men as protectors on the pottery.

The items created in the Pacific region also include jewellery for the men and women. These pieces were used as symbols to designate rank as well as position within the tribe.

All the art and crafts within the Pacific region have a role to display for specific positions.

The only way to find out about this is to talk to the women of today and garner the knowledge they inherently posses, and that which has been passed down to them.
